HOW TO GET TO LAKE COMO ONCE YOU ARRIVE IN ITALY

Thanks to Italy’s many efficient and reliable rail and road networks it is easy to make travel plans to Lake Como, and you will be checking into your hotel and relaxing in front of the lake in no time at all. Each of the three northern Italian airports are connected to the lake and there are then many different ways of traveling the final leg of your journey, depending on your final destination location, and also of course any specific travel preferences you have. The map above clearly shows Lake Como, the many popular lakeside towns, the three main Milan airports of MalpensaBergamo and Linate and also the railway network that connects them.

THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS HOW TO ARRIVE AT LAKE COMO

BY ROAD

Exclusive transfers. Obviously we want you to arrive in the most comfortable way possible and would highly recommend using our exclusive road transfer services. This service is designed specifically to ensure your arrival to Lake Como is comfortable and entirely hassle and stress free. Your driver will be waiting for you at your arrival gate with a vehicle that specifically suits the size of your arriving party, a luxury saloon, mini van or coach.

Public taxi service. Taxi’s should be available from just outside the airport doors. Coach and bus transfers are also available at each of the airports but please note that service information changes regularly so checking details right up to and on the day of your travel to Italy is advised.

Car hire. Hire cars are available, and are a great way to explore the surrounding areas. Please note that not all accommodation on Lake Como have available parking onsite or directly outside. Public parking is available in many of the larger towns but this can be both extremely limited and expensive. Here are some reputable car hire companies located at each of the main airports.

Journey times from the airports to Lake Como by road is between  60 – 90 minutes, and then the onward journey a little longer depending on your exact destination location on the lake.

BY RAIL

Linate airport to Lake Como. Linate airport is not directly linked to the lake by rail. A bus service will take you from the airport to Milan Central train station. From Milan Central train station you can continue your journey by rail to Lake Como, arriving at either of the lakes main southern cities, Como or Lecco depending on your final destination location. If you are staying on the eastern side of the lake then you will require a train to Lecco and then continue your journey. If you are staying on the western side of the lake then you will require a train to Como and then continue your journey.

Malpensa airport to Lake Como. Malpensa airport is linked to the lake by rail. Firstly take a train from the airport to Milan Central station (terminate and change train) then continue your journey by rail to the lake, arriving at either of the lakes main southern cities, Como or Lecco depending on your final destination location. If you are staying on the eastern side of the lake then you will require a train to Lecco and then continue your journey. If you are staying on the western side of the lake then you will require a train to Como and then continue your journey.

Bergamo airport to Lake Como. Bergamo airport is not directly linked to the lake by rail. A bus service will take you from the airport to Bergamo train station. From Bergamo train station you can continue your journey by rail to the lake, arriving at either of the lakes main southern cities, Como or Lecco depending on your final destination location. If you are staying on the eastern side of the lake then you will require a train to Lecco and then continue your journey. If you are staying on the western side of the lake then you will require a train to Como and continue your journey.

Final destination information. If you are staying in the mid lake area (Bellagio) then you have several options of arrival. Use the railway network to the city of Como and then use the ferry service to travel the length of the lake, or use the rail network to the city of Lecco and continue by train up the lake to the town of Varenna and then use a ferry service across the lake to Bellagio. If you are staying on the western side of the lake please note that the railway terminates in Como, and alternative travel arrangements will be required to reach your final destination. Taxi’s should be available from outside the station. Ferries are also available from the main ferry port in Como. If you are staying on the eastern side of the lake then there is a rail network that runs the entire length of the lake which stops at all of the main towns and villages. It is absolutely possible to cut your transfer journey times even further, down to just 15 minutes in fact! The helicopter will be waiting to pick you up from your arrival airport and then take you to the lakes southern city of Como where we will arrange for you to continue the final leg of journey in an exclusive private car or mini van. Journey times from these airports to Lake Como is around 15 minutes, and then a little longer via road depending on your exact accommodation location on the lake.

GETTING AROUND AFTER YOU ARRIVE AT LAKE COMO

There is no doubt that your accommodation location is going to be absolutely beautiful however Lake Como has so much to offer and you will definitely be wanting to get out and about to explore and experience the many wonders that the area has to offer. Luckily then, Lake Como has many efficient and exciting travel options which are readily available and waiting for you. Getting out on the water, and using the lake as a means of transport during your visit is strongly advised, simply because it is such a beautiful way to experience the local sights and sounds, however road and rail options are also available.

Exclusive road transfers. If you need to arrive at your destination in style and ultimate comfort, whether it’s a restaurant, hotel or a special event  then we can arrange an exclusive road transfer service for you. This service will have to be arranged well in advance of the day.

Exclusive boat transfers. If you want to arrive at your destination via it’s private boat port, whether it’s a lakeside restaurant, hotel or a special event venue then we can arrange an exclusive water transfer service for you. We use luxury traditional Venetian water limousine’s and can be arranged at any time of the day or night. The perfect way to arrive and depart for a special occasion. This service will have to be arranged well in advance of the day.

Car ferry and foot passenger boats. The car ferry and foot passenger boat services are extremely efficient and connect many towns and villages up and down the lake. Tickets can be bought on the day of travel so there is no need to worry about planning your journey to much or pre booking your tickets. Please note that if you are using a car to explore the lake and its surrounding areas you will require specific car ferry services to cross the lake, and the car ferry posts are limited so it is advisable to plan your trip. 

Train. The railway network runs the entire length of the eastern side of the lake, and beyond for those wanting to explore further afield. The trains are frequent, inexpensive and a great way to see the lake and the surrounding countryside from a different perspective. A trip on the train is a beautiful experience as it snakes it way along the lake edge cutting and carving it’s way through the surrounding mountain range.

Road Taxi. Road taxi’s are not as readily available as you may be used to back home, and very rarely pass by empty looking for a fare, so pre booking a service is highly recommend. Your hotel and/or the restaurant you may be visiting should will able to arrange one for you on the day.

Water Taxi. Water taxi’s are located at recognisable boat docks along the shores of the lake and are readily available to use up until the hours of sun down. If you want to use a water taxi after this time then you may be able to negotiate and secure a late evening service at one of these ranks earlier in the day.
