DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT A WEDDING

Everyone officially involved on the wedding day will have very distinct duties, which can involve assisting with the planning and/or coordination on the wedding day making life a lot easier for the bride and groom. If you’ve never been asked to participate in a wedding before it may initially seem a little daunting, but fear not, I have put together the ultimate guide for each and every wedding party role, including the duties that are commonly associated with each of them.

MAID OF HONOUR WEDDING RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The bride will rely most heavily on her maid of honour for support during the wedding day. On the morning of the wedding the maid of honour will help the bride get ready, accompany her to the wedding ceremony and arrange her dress and veil for the all important ceremony entrance procession. During the ceremony the maid of honour will traditionally take the bride’s bouquet at the alter, fluff out her dress and sign the certificate/register as her witness. During the reception the maid of honour will traditionally dance with the best man and help organise any formal pictures. The maid of honour will also help the bride make any dress changes and freshen up during the evening, and will ensure that any of the bride’s personal belongings and bouquet are safe and leave with her at the end of the wedding. The maid of honour should be present at any wedding rehearsal meeting prior to the wedding.

The groom will rely most heavily on his best man for support during the wedding day. On the morning of the wedding the best man will help the groom dress, and ensure that he arrives safely and on time at the ceremony location before the bride. During the ceremony the best man will traditionally provide the wedding rings at the alter and sign the certificate/register as the grooms witness. During the reception the best man will round up the guests for any formal pictures, orchestrate the toasts and speeches during dinner and dance with the maid of honour. At the end of the evening the best man should be there to assist the coordination of the closure of the event and make sure everyone leaves safely and together. The best man should be present at any wedding rehearsal meeting prior to the wedding.

A bridesmaid will assist the maid of honour by helping to dress the bride on the morning of the wedding and make sure she arrives at the ceremony location on time. A bridesmaid will be part of the ceremony procession and it is her job to ensure any younger bridesmaids or flower girls also in the procession feel safe and comfortable. Following the ceremony the bridesmaids will help orchestrate the confetti shot. During the reception the bridesmaid should mingle with the guests and generally help to maintain a fun and exciting atmosphere, including getting guests on the dance floor and ensuring the guest book and any photo or message books are completed.

On the wedding day, the groomsman will get dressed early and make sure the groom and best man have everything they need to get ready on time. The groomsman should either arrive early at the ceremony location to meet and greet the arriving guests or be with the guests in assisting them on to any arranged transportation. At the ceremony location the groomsman will assist with the seating of the guests. During the reception the groomsman should mingle with the guests and ensure everyone is having a good time. The groomsman is traditionally expected to assist the best man with the closure of the event and make sure everyone leaves the venue in a safe and timely manner.

A wedding reception will often have a master of ceremonies. The responsibility of the master of ceremonies is to simply keep the day running smoothly. Sometimes this duty will be given to the best man or groomsman however depending on their duties already it is sometimes sensible to allocate someone else, preferably someone who the wedding guests know or will recognise. The role of the MOC is simple, and is required to make announcements as the day progresses in making sure the guests know exactly what is happening, at what time and and where to go. This duty requires confidence and a loud voice, especially as many of the announcements will fall on deaf ears. The wedding planner will be able to provide the days itinerary to the MOC at the beginning of the wedding and even prompt them during the day when the announcements are required.
